Pacific Music Festival
Petronio
A humpback whale surfaces ten feet from your boat. No one else for miles. Then four nights at the world's greatest Afro-Colombian music festival — 300,000 people, the marimba shaking the ground beneath your feet. These are the moments you will never stop talking about — and they're just part of what's waiting.

This isn't a tour.
It's a full cultural immersion
You're sitting in a circle with an Afro-Colombian percussion master. He hands you the drum. The rhythm has lived in these hands for generations — now it's in yours. That night, you walk into the Festival Petronio Álvarez alongside 300,000 Colombians for whom this isn't a festival — it's a homecoming. The marimba hits differently when you've spent the afternoon learning what it means.
Midway through the trip, you board a small boat off the coast of Buenaventura. The Pacific is flat and impossibly blue. And then — twenty feet away — a humpback whale and her calf breach the surface.
You're the only people out here. There is no tour bus version of this moment. This is the one.Vive La Salsa Tours was built on one belief: that travel should take you somewhere real. The Vive La Salsa team handle every detail so you never have to think about logistics. You just show up. By day two, strangers become friends. By day five, they feel like family.

~ The Festival ~
Colombia's
Greatest
Afro-Pacific
Celebration
Since 1997, the Festival de Música del Pacífico Petronio Álvarez has been the most important celebration of Afro-descendant culture in Latin America. Named for the legendary Caleño musician Patricio "Petronio" Romero Álvarez, it draws hundreds of thousands of people to Cali every August — not as spectators, but as participants in something ancient and alive. Ensembles from Guapi, Timbiquí, Tumaco and across Colombia's Pacific Coast compete in marimba de chonta, chirimía, violines caucanos, and more. The Marimba de Chonta has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. When you stand in that crowd and hear it live, you understand exactly why.

Every August, humpback whales migrate through the waters off Buenaventura — and we go out to meet them. Small boat, open water, no crowds, no tourist infrastructure. Just you and the group on the Pacific as one of the largest creatures on earth rises from the water beside you. We follow it with a long, unhurried lunch of fresh coastal seafood. This is the day everyone talks about for years.
The Pacific moment
nothing can replicate

The marimba de chonta. The currulao. The chirimía. These sounds don't just land in your ears — they settle into your chest. Before the festival begins, you'll be inside a hands-on Afro percussion workshop and an Afro dance class with artists who carry this tradition in their hands and feet. Then you take everything you've learned onto the festival floor, surrounded by the people who made it.
Music that Lives
in your Body

Salsa Caleña workshops with real instructors. The Museo de la Salsa — a labour of love built by a man who gave his life to the genre. The Afro City Tour through the neighbourhoods and radio stations that shaped Cali's sound. La Topa Tolundra on a weeknight. El Mulato Cabaret on Agua'e'Lulo night. Calle del Sabor. This is the Cali that doesn't appear in travel blogs — it lives in the people who grew up here.
